I am very happy to say that I am again working on my Six'es blanket. That thing has been a working in progress since I live in The Netherlands, I think I started it like 4 years ago. (I checked and I started it almost exactly 4 years ago, on August 11th.) To be fair, I did restart with only washable yarns about 2 years ago. I know that seems like a no brainer now, but when I started I was just getting back into knitting and just starting to branch out from acrylic yarns. One thing I have started doing on this pattern, to relieve some of the end seeing marathon, is to continue on with the next hexagon instead of binding off. On the bind off row I knit across and then I'm back to the right side and I start with a new color. Less sewing at the end. Fun little chain of hexes.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-73698336703345947722014-07-07T07:48:00.001-07:002014-07-07T07:48:13.183-07:00Fortunately & UnfortunatelySo, the only thing I worked on in May and June was the baby blanket for my new half-sister (M). It turned out really cute. Unfortunately (in terms of blanket making), she is part of a pair, M is a complete set with my half-brother P. Fortunately, I'm on summer vacation. Unfortunately, the first comment out of their mom's mouth was about the cat hair on the blanket. (I knew this, but my dryer wasn't working when I left home, I brought it to my dad's place to wash and dry it. It's cotton, much nicer when machine-dried). Fortunately, I've already fallen in love with P and he needs a blanket from his big sister. Unfortunately, I haven't got much umph to do it when I know how it will be received. Fortunately, I've already bought the yarn. Unfortunately, I've already bought the yarn.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-35852211352036293552014-04-17T12:58:00.002-07:002014-04-17T12:58:57.560-07:00How Lauren got her groove back,or tried anyway. I've been trying to get my groove back. I know it has been such a long time. I have just really been in a knitting funk. How appropriate, start writing on a knitting blog and the inspiration/desire to knit runs out faster than you can say, "Knit 1, purl 2".

Well, I have 3 projects that I have to make. Or it is just 1 really big project, because the are all related, but then that seems overwhelming and not so fun. So 3 projects.
1. Baby blanket for P
2. Baby blanket for M
3. Matching 2 set of cubes for the babies

P and M are my half-siblings that were born near the end of March. There are already a couple weeks old, and I love them to death. I was waiting to see what the gender of the babes would be because Dad and Tammy didn't want to find out. I think they might have know, but weren't telling anybody. So now that I know there is one boy and one girl, I decided on the colors, got the yarn, and am waffling on the pattern(s). I don't know if I will make the blankets the same with different colors, or make completely different blankets. It is hard to know. I haven't met the babies yet, the whole working in Kuwait thing and them being born in Thailand where Dad and Tammy live at the moment.

The yarn I got here at a store called Crafty. I really like the yarn I got. It is Alize Cotton Gold, in black, white, teal, and orange. I really wanted purple instead of orange, but I didn't like their purple; it was a dusty purple which didn't tonally match with the teal. That's important because on the blocks there will be 2 black sides, 2 white sides, and 1 of each of the colors. Tammy really likes black stuff, and I think she wanted black blankets, but I can't bring myself to make black baby blankets. Even here in Kuwait with all the sunshine to see, I just can't. So I went with contrasting colors that are nice and gender neutral. I know some people who don't think teal is gender neutral and then I point out it is my favorite color.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-21711087962479362452014-02-11T06:17:00.000-08:002014-02-11T06:17:02.727-08:00Projects that just want to be FINISHED!So, I thought it would be a good idea to look at all the projects that I have going. I guess I have to guilt myself into finishing.
1. I have been working on Vijante since last Spring Break. It isn't a hard pattern, I'm in ball 3 of 3 for the lace weigtht stockinette stitch portion. Lord, let it be DONE.
2. Socks for Poppy, in, get this, sport weight. What's wrong with me?
3. Lovely blue striped socks.
4. Baby blanket for Malik. This one just needs to be frogged back 10 rows and the decreasing started again. It's garter stitch for carp sakes.
It might be that my creative juices aren't flowing from these patterns. So far they are easy stockinette or garter projects. Hm.. maybe that's the problem. Too easy, but the Vijante will get a lacey pattern after this ball...
And I can't blame it on the cats, they are pretty good when I knit, sometimes they want to bite it, but that's just because I haven't knit around them much.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-78403904549360743432014-02-10T04:29:00.000-08:002014-02-10T04:29:03.255-08:00Knitting MojoDearest Knitting Mojo,
Where did you go? Why do you think I can carry on without you? I tried to tempt you back by starting a new project in November. Two at a time socks, toe up, magic loop, one of you favorites. I barely made it through the toes before the had to be abandoned. They sit dejectedly in their bag. I tried again, unsuccessfully, to get you back to my heart with a baby blanket with new, bright yellow, cotton yarn for a wonderful friend. Half way through, we were going strong, I could feel us coming back together, then I made a gigantic mistake in the decreasing. But I take responsibility for the mistake, I will follow a pattern next time and not just go at it willy-nilly, if that's what you want.
Just please come home.
Lost without you,
LaurenAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-35067612973605563802013-09-13T08:44:00.001-07:002013-09-13T08:44:07.041-07:00KuwaitSo, I've been in Kuwait 2 days short of a month. How much have I done you ask? Um well, not much. I think I've lost a bit of my knitting groove. What happened?
Maybe it was the moving, or the realization of how little yarn I have with me here in Kuwait, or feeling dissatisfied with my progress on my never-ending project and the project I really want to work on I left in NM because my friend was/is planning on coming in the fall to visit.

I has a sad.

Anyway, if you are looking for yarn in Kuwait.... go no further than Bakarat in Salmiya. They have cotton, wool, acrylics, and blends thereof. They also have supplies for needle point, cross-stitch, embroidery (which I am teaching myself), sewing, wood-working, jewlery making, and the list goes on and on. It is an honest to goodness craft store.

I went there with another new teacher a coupe of weeks ago to get ribbon for my jellyfish which hangs so proudly in my classroom, and right below the shop, because Barakat's is on the Mezzanine level and when you're trying to find the entrance you end up walking around the place the first time, we say Lambourginis and Jags and Porsches being cleaned. Apparently that's where some of the Kuwaiti elite take their cars to be cleaned. We also saw this sign.

Part of me thinks this is hysterical, part of me thinks it is so sad that this is what someone is reduced to in order to find a kidney for themselves or a loved one.

We also went to the Salmiya co-op where we found this fantastic aisle sign.
I didn't even actually go to a yarn store. Shocking, I know. But I still ended up with 3 bags of yarn.

Okay, so the story is that when we go to Spain we always rent a house for a week or two. This time we rented a house owned by a Belgian couple who relocated to Spain about 20 years ago. They were both very sweet. Turns out the lady, Mieke, used to be a knitter. She showed me just a few of the sweaters she had made over the years... holy crap. She was a prolific knitter and her seaming was invisible, amazing. *Swoon* And for every sweater she had a matching shawl/scarf. They looked a bit like scarves but much larger. For you who caught the usage of past tense, yes she WAS a knitter. I didn't know that there was a way back once we entered this life. But she had to stop knitting because of a racing heart and apparently she would stress herself out when knitting and go very quickly. (This was gathered from the English/Dutch mix that we were using, so I'm almost sure that's what she meant.) She is now back into painting, and again is a prolific painter.

So, she gave me a whole bunch of yarn that she had just sitting in Spain. About 40 balls of yarn. And a cone of yarn, I've always wanted one of these. The coned yarn (which she had a whole bunch more of in Belgium) she got when a factory (I think it was clothing, but again... language barriers and all that) in Brugge closed.

I'm still going through the yarn. So much yarn. Mostly lace and fingering weights.

Isn't that sad? I am usually working on lesson plans, grading, or writing papers/reading for my other class when I get home and then I go to bed. I don't have a real lunch break during the day because there are usually students in the classroom doing make-up work (that's a whole different topic I won't get into here).
So this past week has been Spring Break and I have been knitting up a storm. I actually got to go to my knitting group this week and saw all those lovely ladies. It was wonderful.

Okay, knitting. Currently on the needles is Viajante by Martina Behm and I am using Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud lace yarn in Garnet Heather. This is a deep red color that I think will be great for traveling. It seems functional and fashionable, and the color will go with my travel clothe.

I hope that your Easter weekend is relaxing and full of candy. It is lesson planning and cleaning for me. Alright, and a bit of knitting.
I will blame the jet lag and say that it was so important for me to sleep today and read the Yarn Harlot's blog, that knitting was simply impossible. Or maybe because I can't see the freakin' thing made it impossible.
I hope that the darkest day of the year is bringing your family closer together. My family is all off doing their own things. Papa is at an MVV game, Mom is celebrating the last day of the semester with teacher friends, the boys are off... somewhere, and I'm here. Relaxing and sleeping.

Happy End of a Mayan Cycle Day, today officially ends the period of the 13th Baktun. After learning about Pre-Columbian MesoAmerican Art during my BA in Art History, I've been watching the build up to this big, Earth-ending apocalypse or some people's interpretation of the event. I love the images that the Mayans produce, and the fact that they have cycles, or ages, that last 5,125 years. Because to me and my way of thinking, that is such a random number, even though it has 5's going on all over the place.
So happy end of the cycle and let's hope that in the new cycle humanity reaches enlightenment so as to end all wars, brutality, and general stupid stuff.
Hahahaha hahahahaha. ROFL. I can't believe that it is almost here.
I was cruising along on the thrummed mittens I am making for my Mom, when I hit a big snag. Nearly finished with the first one and boom. Do not continue, do not collect a gold star for completing one mitten. I am having issues because of the way the pattern decreases, which results there are places on the sides of the fingers without thrumming and therefore susceptible to coldness. What's the point in that? Her fingers are cold, not her palms.

Honestly, this is the most important present of the season and must be ready for Christmas morning. So, it is time to go to the drawing board and figure out my own pattern. Those seem to work out fine in the end. Sometimes.

Sung to the tune of "Little Drummer Boy"
Come on mittens, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum
Why can't you just work out, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum
I've worked so hard on you, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum
A gift just for my mum, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum
thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum, thrum

The hat that I made, was mostly made for stress relief. As such, it didn't turn out the way I hoped and must be frogged back to the beginning of the decreases. Gorgeous color, what the freak was I doing?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-11654170888855998782012-12-04T06:05:00.001-08:002012-12-04T06:07:20.405-08:00With your yarn, awesome knitter, do you see what I see?I see Christmas coming. With jolly music and yuletide laughter. I see it coming without hand knits as well. 8 days and my finals will be over, then I must crank out the wool goods or leave my family to freeze in the cold German winter. A thought too sad indeed.
But what am I working on? oh, a hat with BellaDulce yarn for me. O.o yeah it confuses me too. I say it is comfort knitting, and its not like it is flying off the needles.

By the way, BellaDulce yarns has a website. Well, almost. It is coming soon. Hooray! And it is beautiful and LaDonna has done it all on her own. Impressive! Knitter and web designer. That means I need to block things and take pictures so they have more examples of their yarns in FOs. Yeah, that won't happen for at least 9 days. But I've thought about it.

Now I must go and get dressed. Apparently I have to have clothes on to teach. What? Why? oh, alright.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-74044440378836225162012-11-22T12:58:00.002-08:002012-11-22T12:58:38.231-08:00Thanksgiving Already!?!?I can't believe it is already Thanksgiving. That means November, but not just November, the END of November. What happened? I'll tell you what happened in relation to this blog (I can't account for your lives but I'm sure it has been wonderful) Grad school happened. The final semester before student teaching happened. A job, 18 graduate hours, and 17 practicum hours per week in the classroom happened. In short, life happened. Knitting, not so much. I did finally finish Travel in Pink but I haven't blocked it (still done in my opinion), and since then I have been working on my Hex'n the Blanket project. It has only been two years in the making. 0.o
I had so many plans for Christmas projects for all my family. Hats and cowls and socks, on my. Where am I on that count? Um... I'm not. And that is sad. Apparently, I don't knit for deadlines. They make me not want to knit. That's my excuse.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05186980225326794767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1966577658610095450.post-70875172286335741492012-08-19T22:29:00.001-07:002012-08-19T22:29:58.923-07:00WIP late: written then posted nowSo the last two weeks have been crazy and not much has gotten done in the way of knitting. 2 weeks I was in Venice with the mother figure. Of course yarn was bought, but I'll share that later. Shawl..... Still in progress but I did a scarf for mom done out of expanded(?) yarn. Where you only knit into part of the yarn "fabric". It was very easy, 2 hours easy, after I stopped making mistakes. Very unclear directions. Yuck.
Then I left Germany without taking a picture, very typical that things get forgotten in the malay of packing. Travel in in progress, and I am one who doesn't like to knit when I travel, weird but as a result little knitting gets done. With beaches, bicycles, and sheep, I was in heaven. Until I saw the alpacas. I love alpacas, and even more than the animals themselves, I love alpaca yarn.

The natural colors of alpaca are incredibly diverse, as I learned on a trip to Maine last year. What I thought would be a quick visit to see the alpacas and buy some of yarn made from them, turned into a 2 hour talk about raising alpacas and alpaca genetics. If breeding alpacas and genetics related to coloring interests you, check out the this link.

Anyway, back to the Dutch island. Not only are there many sheep on the island, but there is also an alpaca farm. Both the sheep and alpaca's fiber is spun on the island and sold at a local shop. Locally grown, spun, and sold. Not a yarn shop, but a very sweet little place with beautiful things, de Strandjutter. Also, the lady was super kind and she had a giant Great Dane. I bought some beautiful deep red-brown, very light fingering, 2-ply 100% alpaca. There isn't a yardage on the had written tag, only the content and weight, 175 gm. I would guesstimate (very scientific, I know) that I have about 700 yards, erring to the low side.

Backstory on the Bella Dulce yarn: You might notice that the name of the Bella Dulce yarn in Lauren. Why yes! That is my name. Could it be? Yes. I know the wonderful ladies who dye this yarn and they named this fabulous color after me. It is pink and sparkly, and really, what more could a girl ask for?

This was dyed by two of the most fabulous ladies in the world, who happen to be a part of my knitting group. They have taken me under their wing and each has treated me like a daughter. They are more than words to me. they haven't yet put their beautiful yarns up on Ravelry, but assure me, I have been after them. I will update with a link when possible.
This picture does nothing for the color of the yarn. Ewww. I know reds are difficult to catch, especially in artificial light, but come on. You can see the sparkles really nicely though...
This is a new beginning for me. A chance to muse, create, harp, complain, and extol the virtues of yarn. Join me as I navigate through knitting, yarn dying, general craftiness, and the ever essential, yarn buying.

I'm not really sure how many times I have said "Darn this yarn!" (although it may or may not contain choice words thrown in there). But I do know that many a yarn have been in time out at my house, some will stay there for the duration of their time, only to be taken out, pet, and glanced at woefully. Others will remain in this place of purgatory until they unknot themselves, become a different yarn, or get back on my good list. Really the only options here.
